Despite a promising start to the match from the home side, it was Kilmarnock who took the lead in the 12th minute after Dean Shiels showed good composure in the penalty area to place the ball beyond Allan McGregor, after picking up a pass from Paul Heffernan.
Ally McCoist was a dealt another major blow after Romanian defender Dorin Goian limped off and had to be replaced by Ross Perry.
David Healy then had the ball in the back of the net but the Northern Irish striker was ruled offside, after combining well with Kirk Broadfoot.
Things went from bad to worse for the home side when Sasa Papac saw red after a poorly timed challenge.
Ally McCoist shuffled his pack at half-time, by replacing David Healy with Mervan Celik as his side continued the hunt for an equalizer.
The second half saw yet another Rangers goal chopped off. Lee McCulloch got on the end of a Sone Aluko corner but referee Ian Brines believed that McCulloch fouled Kilmarnock goalkeeper Cammy Bell.
Rangers refused to give up their search of a goal and Kirk Broadfoot was replaced by Algerian midfielder Salim Kerkar.
