Moni Malawi
Moni Malawi a Scottish registered charity set up with the aim of raising money to assist the people of Malawi. "Moni" means "hello" in Chichewa, the principle language of Malawi. Our name therefore translates as "Hello Malawi".
Malawi is a landlocked country in southern Africa. With a population of 14 million it is one of the least developed and most densely populated countries in the world. Per capita GDP is £450, compared to the UK figure of £20,000. The country suffers from high infant mortality, low life expectancy, and a high prevalence of HIV/AIDS.
A group of us met to decide how we could raise money to fund specific projects in areas of need. In setting up Moni Malawi we believe that we can make a real difference to the lives of some of the poorest people in Malawi, and indeed the world. Our formal Statement of Purposes is:
- THE ADVANCEMENT OF EDUCATION
- THE IMPROVEMENT OF HEALTH
- THE RELIEF OF POVERTY
In pursuance of those aims (but not otherwise), the company shall have the following powers:
- To advance education, improve health, and relieve poverty generally in Malawi with a particular, but not exclusive, focus on children and young adults, and with the power to advance those objects throughout Africa where needs are identified whether following natural disasters or otherwise.
- To work with and distribute funds through charities working in Malawi to support projects which advance the above objects.
- To fund and undertake projects in Malawi directly.
- To build relationships with the people and organisations in Malawi in order to encourage and fund the undertaking of sustainable development projects, with demonstrable community benefits, compatible with the above objects.
- To encourage philanthropy for Malawi throughout Scotland and the UK by creating awareness of needs in relation to the above objects.
The target of Moni Malawi in year one was to raise money to support specific projects including the building of a school by the Betty Cunningham International Trust. During the first year we also gave donations to a number of other charities including: 500 Miles, Linda McDonald Charitable Trust, and Hope-into-Homes Malawi Project.
Scotland has a long history of working in Malawi and with the support of businesses, politicians, families and friends Moni Malawi can develop this relationship and bring the needs of Malawi to the forefront of charity fundraising in Scotland.
